Haunted by a terrifying past.

The Path of the Sword Rites of Ascension Book 1 eBook Remi Michaud

I came into this book by way of a recommendation and the story held me to the end. It's a very strong beginning and, if it were a single book, I'd agree it may have taken too long for the main character, Jurel, to develop - as the first book of a trilogy I have a feeling this full immersion into his life and development will matter later.
Michaud is descriptive, as others have said, but I didn't get tired of the pictures he painted in this novel.
It's been awhile, honestly, since I've read a Fantasy novel. This one brought me back to why I once read them. It offers a complete new world, not a patchwork of other people's visions. Jurel's seeming cowardice is answered in time, not too soon and with chilling effect. Jurel is quite a reluctant hero, and the surrounding characters are also given time to develop fully. There aren't those annoying characters we find in books who show up at the right time then disappear. With The Path of the Sword, the men and women are given a full arc. Some, like Captain Salma, and the children of Jurel's youth, give the impression we'll be seeing more of them later.
The only reason I give The Path of the Sword 4 stars instead of 5 is the feeling it ended too soon. But maybe that's just me.

The Path of the Sword Rites of Ascension Book 1 eBook Remi Michaud Reviews

I like the plot and it was well written, however reading was tedious. The author spent too much time describing everything. Sure we like to know what the room looked like, but down to the glint of light off the stone? I had to skip through the book just to get to the plot. I like long books, but I believe he could have told the story without going into minute detail. I would still read the next book. I gave it a 3 star because it was too too detailed oriented which most of the time didn't really have anything to do with the story and just made the book longer then it should be.
I am an avid fantasy reader since 1966, when I picked up a little book called the Hobbit. It wasn't even in paperback and I had to get it from the library. I read it, rushed back to get the rest and it's been that way ever since. I have read countless books, good, bad, indifferent, and great. And many of them had great heart. As did this book. I can't wait to read the rest, and will be sad when it's done. In around four and five years, I will pick them up, all at once, and read it again. Meanwhile I will have to wait, and check anxiously to see if the next one is available yet. Then, if the wait is too long, I get to read the first one again.
Starts a little slow, but picks up . nice plot looking forward to next book
When I read the synopsis for this story it was obvious that I would be reading a "coming of age" story, and I read through some of the reviews and saw that some people found the pacing of the character development to be tedious and one was frustrated at the fact that the villain is not introduced until halfway through the book. I have to say that, as it is a "coming of age" story it was somewhat predictable in that you knew how the overall plot was going to go and I think that the foreshadowing of some of the less-obvious twists was too strong, causing you to correctly predict what those twists would be well in advance. That said, I thoroughly enjoyed following the main character through childhood and into manhood, and I like the way the idea of who the "villain" is evolved as he grew up.
The plot, characters (with one exception) and the pacing were great. Unfortunately, the main character was afraid of everything and a complete coward for much of the book; to make things worse he was blissfully unaware of being a coward. It was like watching one of those annoying animes where the main character is wimp 90 percent of the time and the hero the other ten percent. At times it just seemed like the main charactrer was being intentionally made ignorant/fearful so that the book could continue.
Usually i get on an author about not being descriptive enough, this is one of the few that i wish he'd shut up. Here's a quick example.

"There was a flurry of movement in the shadows and the boy darted out quick as a thought. He took three paces at a dead run and stopped, stretched out his arms and breathed deeply of the wonderful air, his chest puffing out like a sparrow's, and he grinned a grin that spread from ear to ear. He stood there with his breath held letting the sun, that ancient and inexorable skygod, still only just begun his day's journey smile its primordial light upon him, warming him."

That's not even the whole paragraph, but that only three sentences, THREE! I got 4% into this book before i couldn't take anymore. The author seems to feel the need to explain or describe EVERYTHING with excruciating detail.

Some may enjoy this brand of writing, but if the rest of the book is anything like this (no reason to think its not going by other reviews) then i am all too happy that stopped. I gave it 2 stars even though i couldn't bring myself to finish it because, again, some may like it and i'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt.

I haven't read the sample but i suggest you do, if you cant handle a book reading like i posted above, then i cant recommend this book and you should give it a pass.
(Spoiler Alert) just a warning there is a spoiler down in the review just an FYI for those who hate those. OK, first off I have to say that this was a really good book. I really enjoyed it . But I do agree with one of the other reviewers that it took a bit too long to get the to the point. The whole story plot didn't start to pickup until about the middle. That said though I think that the beginning was important to create the effect that the author was trying to convey. You have to understand the kind of pacifist that Jurel was to truly understand why the changes that he has to undergo are so devastating to him emotionally. Over all I was very satisfied with how it ended and completely admit to a little blood thirsty glee when Jurel finally figures things out. I was a little worried that he would stay a wimpy little child. To be truthful though it wasn't really that he was a wimp it was more that he honestly couldn't understand why fighting would help anything at all. And boy does he figure it out. (Spoiler Alert) I for one got goosebumps when it got to '"You killed my father." The God of War said.'
